FARRAWAY SLAMS LABOR’S PLAN TO TURN ON AVERAGE-SPEED CAMERAS FOR CARS IN THE COUNTRY

Former NSW Regional Roads Minister and NSW Upper House MP Sam Farraway has hit out at the NSW Labor Government’s plan to extend average-speed cameras, originally designed for heavy vehicles, to cars—targeting everyday drivers in regional NSW.

Mr Farraway said the move is just a sneaky cash grab from the government to raise revenue and urged everyone to sign his petition to stop this "ridiculous" policy.

“We all know these cameras are mostly in regional areas. Across the Central West, 54km of road will be impacted. Locals use these roads every day to get to work, school or the shops—this is going to hit them hard,” Mr Farraway said.

“Most accidents occur within 0-10kph over the speed limit and the static speed cameras have done nothing to bring those figures down.

“In Germany, they have far higher speed limits, yet a lower road toll per 100,000 people.

“Minns and Albanese slashed funding for crucial road upgrades like the Great Western Highway, cut back on road and pothole repairs and reduced Highway Patrol numbers.

“Our country roads are a mess and instead of making them safer, they’re punishing drivers. If the roads were safer, the people would be safer.

“Labor’s scrapped our election commitment to help young drivers get into safer vehicles and it’s a major factor in regional road fatalities. Instead of addressing that, they’re using speed cameras to fine people.

“There’s a real danger this policy will have unintended consequences. If people fear losing their licenses too easily, they’ll take their chances on unsealed roads to avoid the cameras. That’s a recipe for disaster.

“Labor promised to look after the bush, but this just shows how out of touch they are with the reality of living in regional NSW.”
